Expandable graphite (acidified graphite), a graphite intercalation compound obtained from natural crystalline flake graphite treated with an acidic oxidizing agent,is also known as graphitic acid, acidified graphite, or graphite oxide.

    Expandable graphite, also known as acidified graphite, is a type of flexible graphite. It is obtained by treating high-quality natural flake graphite with an acidic oxidizing agent. When exposed to high temperatures, expandable graphite takes on a worm-like shape and can expand 100-400 times its original size. It retains the properties of natural graphite, including excellent molding plasticity, flexibility, ductility, and sealability. Widely used as a sealing material, it finds applications in petroleum, chemical, electrical, aerospace, automotive, marine, and instrument industries.

    Expandable graphite exhibits good expansibility, is porous, and has a wide temperature resistance range (-200°C to 3000°C) under oxygen insulation. It remains stable even under high temperature, high pressure, or radiation conditions.

    Expandable graphite is a promising engineering material used for fire seals, flame retardants, refractory bricks, crucibles, insulation, liners, soundproofing, and shock-absorbing materials. Its exceptional properties, such as lightness, conductivity, heat resistance, acid-alkali corrosion resistance, resilience, lubrication, and chemical stability, have earned it the nickname 'Sealant King' worldwide.
